A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN?
Concerns are mounting over the state of Canada’s northern air services due to a confluence of issues that are in whole or in part due to new regulations from Transport Canada that significantly limit pilot duty time. Aircraft operating under the 703 designation that includes air taxis are facing severe impacts including:
- Vastly reduced availability of air services limiting essential and even critical transport of people, goods and services to remote communities and facilities.
- Reduced safety and wellbeing of pilots and passengers.
- Very significant cost increases to operators of air services that will have to be absorbed by clients using northern air services.
- Exposing operators to penalties for non-compliance with regulations that are convoluted and unclear.
- Further exacerbation of pilot shortages currently in the field and entering training programs.
On todays podcast I talk to consultant Mark Holmes who is coordinating a consortium of stakeholders who want to get the regulation put on hold. This would give all parties involved time to discuss the changes that need to be made to make things work for everyone.
