The Northern Region of Manitoba is a well-known hotbed for trophy lake trout. If you are looking to capitalize on a big fish hot bite up here, the time to go is now.
The fall months offer a prime window of opportunity to hook into multiple world-class fish. These drive-to destinations for giant Manitoba lakers rival those of many fly-in outposts in Canada. Paved road access to a host of lakes in this corner of the province give any angler the chance to target Master Angler sized fish.
Avid Manitoba angler Chris Tholl and visiting American friends Aaron Whitt and Aaron Clark went on a recent excursion to Kississing Lake. Staying out of Kenanow Lodge for their annual trip, they boated a pile of monster lake trout during their stay.
Never having to travel too far from the lodge, they focused their efforts on targeting shallower ‘spawning period’ structure. Cast and retrieving large profile lures at water around 6 feet in depth resulted in vicious strikes from these hungry predators.
The largest fish of the trip measured at 42 inches with a good number of other lakers surpassing the 35” Master Angler benchmark.

Other trophy calibre lake trout waterways include Lake Athapapuskow, Clearwater Lake, and Reed Lake. Numerous lodges and outfitters operate in the region that offer a range of services from all-inclusive stays and fully guided trips to boat rentals and access. The nearby towns of Flin Flon and The Pas are urban centres with plenty of modern accommodations to stay at as well.
