The Miles Mac Angling Club is back for another year, with more students than ever interested in learning how to fish and raising money for a good cause. The Club is once again raising money for the “Kids Fishing for a Cure” organization. All students participating will be getting pledges and organizers Tim Au and Corey Kapilik will be presenting a cheque to the organization on June 2. This earmarked money goes to Child Oncology at Cancer Care Manitoba as well as for taking children who are current or past patients and their families fishing!
Last year The Miles Mac Angling Club raised almost $1000. They are hoping to at least match that this year.
On Monday, May 15th the club hit the shores of the mighty Red River at Lockport. With 20 students participating this evening over 90 fish between 4:15pm-8pm!
I was invited down to participate in the event, and spent a great evening helping students learn the in an outs of casting and tying on lures. Most of the fish closer to the locks were caught using a simple 3/8 ounce lead head jig and a twister tail.
Teacher Tm Au hellping out! |
Tim Au and one of the students hooked up a big channel catfish using this setup and it was fun to watch the fish head to the dam with the young angler hanging on to the rod for dear life!
After an intense battle, the fish was finally netted by Tim and this young angler had her picture taken with her first channel catfish. Further down towards the Red River spillway another group of anglers were throwing out pickerel rigs tipped with shiner minnows.
Many a carp and silver bass came to shore using this techinique. All in all it was a great evening with some pretty spectacular fishing, all for a great cause. Congratulations to Tim Au and Corey Kapilik and the students of Miles Mac!
