MANITOBA
They arrive a later every year but when they do it is quite a bite! The greenback walleye showed up in the Red River starting the first week of October and the fishing got better every day.
Unfortunately Mother Nature has played a big role in shutting down the party. Heavy snowfall the last three days is making conditions tough to trailer and launch. Still, shore anglers are catching some nice walleye!
As the season winds down don’t forget to get the water out of your lower leg on your outboard and put some fuel conditioner in the gas tank. It was a great season on the water!

Hardcore anglers are still fishing Tobin Lake up at Nipawin. Care must be exercised at the boat launches with freezing conditions. At this time of year we would always bring a pail of sand to sprinkle down to make sure one can get out at the end of the day. As boats go in and out a ton of water gets dripped on the launches, freezing into an icy hazard. I have been through it a few time and it’s no fun. Be prepared andj you will be fine.
Jigs are usually better than cranking at this time of the year. The cranks are still worth a shot though and can produce the biggest fish of the trip just before dark.
Check out this 15 pound 8 oz beast that my friend Russ Heatherington landed a few falls ago on a jig and minnow.

Once again, the November Hooked Magazine Fishing Reports are always the toughest for me to report on. Most Alberta anglers have put away or are in the middle of putting away their boats and fair-weather fishing gear and have turned their attention to the November hunting season, myself included. I have a November white-tailed deer hunt and a moose hunt that has been keeping me up all night with excitement and anticipation. However, first things first.
I just returned from picking up my boat at Tracker Marine out of Rocky View, near Calgary where the Tracker Marine team not only winterized my boat, but they also covered it with fresh shrink-wrap to keep the snow and ice at bay and it appears to be perfect timing. As I sit and write this fishing report, it has turned cold, and it has started snowing. As a matter of fact, we are under a heavy snowfall warning at the time of this writing.
Each year along with winterizing my boat, I have Tracker Marine remove all my batteries and I store them in my garage. I have a charging station in my garage where I can keep my batteries for the winter and keep them fully charged with a 2amp trickle charge throughout the winter months. I run a 24V system for my trolling motor and electronics plus my cracking battery so not storing and maintaining my batteries properly over the winter can be very costly in the spring. From there, my boat goes to Dandy Auto Marine and Storage in Airdrie where it awaits the 2024 fair-weather fishing season.
For now, like so many others, I will turn my attention to the hunting season and once that comes to an end on November 30th, look forward to Christmas and the start of a new ice-fishing season.
Safe hunting everyone. I hope everyone goes into December with meat in the freezer!
