Some significant snowfall in many regions of the province has been good news for those who like to jump on a snowmachine and explore the backcountry. Fishing has been pretty darn good as well!

SASKATCHEWAN
A recent dump of snow has made travel a bit trickier on the lakes and reservoirs, especially in the central part of the province. Pike fishing action has been good on Tobin Lake with some trophy walleye thrown in the mix. The southern reservoirs are kicking out lots of nice fish as well. Anglers are moving to find pods of fish in the 15 to 25 foot range.

ALBERTA-WES DAVID-FISHING THE WILD WEST
Despite the much-needed heavy snowfall and -23 cold snap, the Red Deer Sports & Outdoor Show held at Red Deer’s Westerner Park March 1-3, was a huge success. The Red Deer Sports & Outdoor Show is put on by the Red Deer Fish & Game Association and is the club’s major fundraiser and despite the bad weather and poor road conditions, local and surrounding residents filled the halls and supported the event in every way. I didn’t hear the final attendance numbers but during the peak times, the venue was shoulder-to-shoulder with avid outdoorsmen and women. Red Deer Fish & Game Association members were so happy with the turnout they were already talking about plans for the 2025 show.
The Edmonton Boat & Sportsmen’s Show, March 14-17, at the Edmonton Expo Center, will be transformed into Western Canada’s largest outdoor sports show. Hunting, Fishing, and everything outdoors will fill four halls at the Expo Center, and being St Patty’s Day weekend, I’m sure there will be some hunting and fishing stories told at the local pub after the show.
The Alberta show season will come to a close with the Southern Alberta Outdoor Show held in Lethbridge April 5-7, at the Agri-Food Hub and Trade Center.
Through the Ice
Many of the stocked trout water bodies have been fishing very well in central Alberta. I managed to sneak out for a day on the hard water and targeted both rainbow and tiger trout. We landed several trout with all our bites coming on a ¼ oz Tic-Tac jig from Big Sky Jigs with a small piece of brown Power-Bait smothered in Liquid Mayhem. We also noticed all our bites came with the bait resting right on the bottom. Even if the bait was only an inch off the bottom, the trout were not interested. I’m hoping to get out a couple more times after the Edmonton Boat & Sportsmen’s Show.
