BIG DAY FOR GUSSY
It was a long and exciting Day 1 of the on the water action. Darrin Bohonis had gone down to the Volunteer Dock to the catch the kickoff of the tournament. He was joined by thousands of others who had come to cheer on the home town heroes.
While there might have been 55 Australians cheering for Carl Jocumsen, there were hundreds here from Canada rooting for the four Canadians in the field. This included Cooper Gallant, the Bass Open Qualifier from Bowmanville, Ontario. This guy is the real deal, having finished second the Opens Angler of the Year category. He also won the Southern Open at Cherokee Lake. He is not going away anytime soon.
As the Day unfolded on Bassmaster Live, we watched Gussy put on a clinic, catching his limit of big smallmouth in what seemed like minutes(that’s because it was).
Here is the link to the footage of him catching fire. https://www.bassmaster.com/bassmaster-classic/video/gustafsons-flurry/
After that he pretty much spent the rest of the day looking for news spots. Darrin and I were at the Day 1 weigh in and it was probably two hours until he rolled into the arena. Everybody knew it was either going to be him or Brandon Lester that was going to be in the lead after Day One. Here is what happened.
We have our fingers crossed for Gussy for Day Two. He seems confident he has enough fish to last all three days. You can follow the action on Bassmaster Live. Here’s his thoughts for Day 2:
