MANITOBA Biggest story by far since our last report happened at Balsam Bay on the east side of Lake Winnipeg. Last Sunday five vehicles went through the ice. Luckily no one was seriously injured. Combine extremely heavy flows from both the Red and Winnipeg Rivers and conditions could be iffy for a long time, despite our recent cold snap. The KidFish event on the Red, scheduled for January 5th, had to be cancelled. The Red River is nine feet above normal. On the plus side of things, the stocked trout lakes across the province are still fishing extremely well. Check…

MANITOBA A bit of snowfall hasn’t hampered in the ice fishing effort in this part of the world. Ice conditions are good in most locales. The biggest story of the week were the huge crappies caught by a couple of anglers in Eastern Manitoba. Meantime Genico Melegrito landed a 16 inch monster out of Star Lake, also the largest Master Angler crappie ever registered there! Congratulations guys. This body of water has been off the radar…
Check out the new vid by Jay Siemens, where he gets out with friends onto early ice on Lake Manitoba. The walleye bite on this lake has really improved over the years and the boys show how fun it is. Outdoor adventurer and wild food creator Josh McFaddin drops by to make some delicious looking walleye wontons poppers right on the ice.
MANITOBA Another great fishing story! Kristin Donovan has spent a lot of time fishing Mid Lake near Thompson over the years. Unfortunately, she has not had that much luck, even though the lake is stocked pretty much every year with different trout species. That all changed this past week! “We caught it jigging – they didn’t seem to like it when it was still. I was using a very small silver spoon with a minnow hooked to it. It was a thrill… it pulled hard! I had tightened my drag after losing a fish that seemed big. We had also…

Nice weather conditions to be outside! With a warm weekend forecast in most parts of western Canada it’s a great time to head out on the ice. Some anglers are using ATV’s to travel out on their favourite lake, but the preferred and safest mode is by walking out. Manitoba For the walleye angler, Lake of the Prairies is producing some outstanding fishing for both size and numbers. Roger and Sue Gere, who live in Langenburg, spent a couple days on this reservoir this past week. Roger says the south end near the dam has five to seven inches of…
An especially cold week in western Canada has made solid ice on most our smaller to medium sized lakes. With continued heavy runoff from many of our tributaries in the province, rivers and river mouths are dangerous places to fish right now. Smaller lakes, and non-current areas should be targeted. For those keen on getting walleye fishing there are a few good options. The north end of Lake of the Prairies has been on fire for those walking out on the five to seven inches of ice. This starts at Cupar Creek and extends northward. From Pyott’s south, the ice is still…
ICE ANGLERS HAVE BEEN UNLEASHED ON MANITOBA’S SMALL LAKES A cold start to November has been making ice! A few hardcore anglers have been already. Phil Paczkowski, who owns Patch’s Bait Shop in Roblin and is an outfitter in the region, says most of the trout lakes have three inches of ice more. It pays to be extremely careful at this time of the year, with ice picks around the neck of your floater suit, a partner, along with a rope. Check ice constantly as you go out. Phil has been a hardcore fisherman all his life and while he…
Over the last seven years, more than 16,000 channel catfish have been tagged in the mighty Red River. Why, you ask? It’s part of research being conducted by the University of Nebraska to determine why this fishery is so productive. At a recent seminar at the Victoria Inn, Mark Pegg spoke to a full house about the research and the results from that work. One of the most fascinating pieces of information to come to light was the age of channel catfish in the section of the Red River from Emerson all the way to Netley Marsh. Channel catfish can…
