Hooked magazine, KidSport Winnipeg and FXR teamed up to provide an auction prize at the 2016 Mark Scheifele Annual Golf Classic to go on an ice fishing trip with Winnipeg Jets’ Dustin Byfuglien. Auction winners Dr. Joe Kim and Dr. Joel Myhre were treated to an amazing day of fly-in ice-fishing on Lake Dauphin, Manitoba! Derek Longley from Prairie Helicopters flew our winners, along with Buff and friend Keith Ballard, plus Josh McFaddin from FXR, onto Lake Dauphin. They were met on the ice by Hooked publisher Kevin Stobbe and editor Don Lamont, plus Mike Witoski from KidSport Winnipeg. Gildas Paradis from…
I know a lot of you anglers out there follow specific moon phases to target many different fresh water species. Now being honest with only yourselves, how many of you have used them to target Northern Pike? I know what you’re thinking, who could imagine there would be any logic behind these aggressive fish. Roaming around under the ice eating everything in sight at all times of day. Thrown under the bus as a very careless fish you could catch on a broken toaster any day of the week. The fact of the matter is to consistently ice monster pike…
It was early November, a freshening northwest wind blowing across Traverse Bay, bringing with it flecks of snow. I was out on the water looking for the mighty greenback walleye that this area was famous for. I have been fishing this area for about 35 years, a testament to how good this fishery is. Over the years, I have worn an incredible array of cold weather gear to withstand the extreme conditions that can exist when on open water at this time of the year. This particular day I was as warm as a bug in a rug thanks to…

Over the past decade or so it’s been really interesting to follow the ice fishing industry grow as new products have made heading out in cold weather and catching fish much easier than it used to be. I don’t have any numbers to base this on but I feel like ice fishing has probably been the fastest growing segment of the entire fishing industry at least in our part of the World in the past decade. The ability for us to be mobile on the ice while staying comfortable combined with the excellent fishing opportunities that exist all across Ontario’s…
Change in scenery as we head out east to Lake of the Woods in search of reel screaming lakers. Awesome day fishing with the crew running around Sunset Country surrounded by its beautiful scenery. https://youtu.be/r2nE3sr12xw
Headed out January 28, 2017 with Matt Cornell from Bruin Outfitting and the crew in search of big Lake Winnipeg walleye. With the recent shift in weather from warm to cold, it turned what was a very aggressive bite to an all day grind. Slower presentations, and patiently waiting for the fish to commit before moving out baits was our keys to success. Overall fun day on the water with a few big girls, one of them a huge tank being iced. https://youtu.be/PLw6vS0QHAY
Admired by a myriad of avid anglers, Manitoba’s yellow perch has been considered one of the most valued species and a significant contributor to many memorable maiden angling experiences. Like its close cousin, the walleye, the perch offers equivalent eating qualities that are only enhanced by their abounding population and generous limits. Combine their prolific numbers and culinary appeal, add their constant motivation to grow to huge proportions, and you have a winning combination that has fulfilled a need for the rising number of “Jumbo” perch anglers that gather in Manitoba every year. Catching jumbo perch that easily exceed the…
Hooked editor Don Lamont and publisher Kevin Stobbe were treated to ice fishing in comfort and style on Lake Winnipeg with Courtlyn Suszko, the SnoBear Sales Representative for MB & SK at Warner Industries. She is fierce! She picked us up in her SnoBear and took us out on for a fun day of fishing, punching holes in the ice like a pro. We gave her a little luck to catch her first perch of the year, as she had mentioned it earlier in the day, and sure enough she pulled one in on a Todd Longley lure. Good times! Watch for Courtlyn and her SnoBear at upcoming fishing…
