Freshwater Drum are Zebra Mussel Crushers! Zebra mussels are a growing scourge in Manitoba waters, first arriving in Lake Winnipeg in 2013. They are now found across the lake, and have spread to Cedar Lake. That range is likely, unfortunately, to expand in coming years. As transport by boats is the primary means of spread, we all need to take special care to wash and clean boats to prevent further spread. Zebra mussels grow quickly and spread rapidly and change the entire lake community where they are found, usually not for the better. They filter out plankton reducing the food…

The landscape is brown, the rivers are brown and even my silver Tacoma is now mostly brown. The ice is off and about three hours from now we will be rolling into our destination where everything will still be brown. Joel’s Place: I arrive at Joel’s just after four in the morning, his gear is piled beside an open garage; a case of PBR, a rod that has three of four pieces together, fly boxes and a pair of slippers. He stumbles out of a sliding door with two armfuls of gear and says he will be ready in five.…

According to anglers from all around the globe, Manitoba has the absolute best trophy channel catfish fishery in the world. Anglers and guides in the province are concerned that might change as commercial fisherman show increasing interest in selling catfish in a free market system which was introduced this past year by the provincial government. To address that problem, the government had implemented a regulation early in the new year that made it illegal to commercially harvest catfish. That didn’t sit well with the 43 commercial fishers that right now sell smoked catfish. These fishers have asked the government to…

Set out on your own adventure or relax in the hands of an experienced guide and enjoy a shore lunch over an open fire. You can…

Close to 150 SnoBears descended on Lake Winnipeg this past week. It was part of the Annual SnoBear Migration event held out of the Lakeview Hotel in Gimli. Participants in the event included Bob and Wayne Izumi, as well as Kevin Stobbe and Don Lamont from Hooked. The event also included a mini tournament on the ice in support of youth fishing. Over the course of the three days of the Migration there were a lot of trophy walleye caught. Bob Izumi landed one of the larger fish at almost 30 inches, while SnoBear president Ron Balzer caught one just…
The weather was cool as we wended our way by snowmachine across the Winnipeg River from Trail End Camp. We were headed out into the Whiteshell Provincial Park, a winter playground. I was fishing with Vance Hrechkosy, whom I have known for a number of years. Vance just started guiding for Eagle Nest Lodge after I left there in 1986 after three years. A few years later Vance and Maureen bought and expanded Trail End Camp to become one of the best drive-to operations in the province. I usually make it out to this part of the world about once every…
