I headed out with good friend and photographer Darrin Bohonis this past weekend to Sunset Country for a shot at some Lake Trout and we were not disappointed… I caught 2 and Darrin caught 4, a good laker day by anyone’s standards!
The weather was not the greatest and we had to overcome a few obstacles such as white out conditions, high winds, poor road conditions and lots of snow. The only saving grace weather-wise was that it was quite mild with the temps hovering around minus 6 Celsius. Although the weather was throwing a loop into our adventure, the funny thing was is that it seemed to really turn the fish on.
The night before Darrin and I had reviewed our lake maps, researched a few areas and decided on one area of the lake to hit. We knew we would not be able to run-n-gun, so we wanted to find a spot where we felt confident a Laker or two would frequent. The area we choose seemed like a perfectly logical spot to hold a few fish.
Once at our spot we drilled our holes, set up the shack and fished. We fished for what seemed like days waiting for a good target to appear on our Humminbird flashers and then it happened… we saw a huge target flying up and down the water column nudging our baits and then Darrin felt that THUMP! Darrin landed the first fish of the day after a short battle, a real beauty.
After a few pictures the fish was released, we laughed and retied and reorganized the shack. Darrin then proceeded to drop down his bait… and on the first drop “WAAM!” he had another nice trout on…you’re kidding me? Darrin caught 2 fish in more or less 2 casts (for lack of a better word). We actually caught 3 of the lake trout in less than an hour. It was an awesome trip as we would have been very happy with just the one fish…to catch 6 was an added bonus, and it sure made the over 3 hour slow drive home that much more tolerable!

Wow some nice looking lakers there guys. Got to get me a laker one day.
You didn’t miss anything on LW. Whiteout condition’s prevented us from getting, out. WE fished maybe a 500 yards out and only caught 12 fish in a few hours, but nothing big.
